No takers for Safety Apps!

The entire nation was startled with the Nirbhaya gang rape in 2012 and that was followed by country wide protests against the women harrasment and rape. Following the incident, a flood of safety apps hit the market on elaborating various steps for women safety.

These apps were designed in such a way, women while traveling or staying alone will be able to send out alerts and the GPS location of a person to either the police or pre-added contacts on the phonebook. Even AP government rolled out two apps – IClick and Abhayam, again for the safety of its women.

However it is said that there are no takers for these apps. For an instance, the Abhayam app, rolled out in January has the feature of a panic button programmed to send alerts to the nearest police station with complete with the sender’s name and area. However they say there is no single complaint till date through the app. The app developers and police blame this little or no purpose due to acute lack of awareness among women.
