Celebrities’ Moral Accountability Questioned

The Narendra Modi Government has introduced the Online Gaming Bill, 2025, effectively banning several betting apps across the country. The bill received approval from both houses of Parliament and was signed by the President, making it law.

Following the enactment, multiple betting apps have ceased operations, leading to a sudden collapse of this industry. Official data indicates that nearly 45 crore people lose around Rs 20,000 crore annually due to these platforms.

While the move will likely result in significant job losses, the government sees it as a necessary step to curb gambling-related losses. The debate has now shifted towards celebrities who previously endorsed such apps.

Actor Vijay Deverakonda was recently summoned by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with this issue. He was the only celebrity to speak to the media after the probe, earning appreciation for his openness.

However, Vijay argued that he endorsed gaming apps, not betting apps, claiming both were different. He also pointed out that gaming apps sponsored Indian cricket. But with the Online Gaming Act now in effect, even Dream11, a major sponsor, has shut down.

This raises questions about the distinction between gaming and betting apps. Celebrities may defend themselves legally, but their moral accountability remains in doubt, given the damage caused to countless families.

The controversy also highlights surrogate advertising, with actors like Balakrishna and Mahesh Babu promoting liquor and gutkha under the guise of sodas and pan masalas. These endorsements may be legal but raise serious ethical concerns.

Celebrities enjoy immense support from their fans and society. It is time they exercise caution in their endorsements and contribute to creating a more responsible and healthier society.
