The other day, the BJP Core Committee meeting has happened and they have announced doing a joint agitation with Janasena against the proposed Property Tax increase in Andhra Pradesh. The state government is mooting property tax in urban areas based on the market value of the properties.

This will lead to a huge spike in property taxes. Property owners will naturally suffer and those who are living in rented houses will suffer as well since the owners will pass on the burden in the form of increased taxes. TDP supporters, however, term the fight of BJP and Janasena are mere lip service.

“Before municipal elections, TDP repeatedly tried to expose the government’s evil plan. But Janasena and BJP were in a relaxation mood. They were sleeping back then. They did not take it seriously. So-called agitations now are just mere service,” they criticize BJP and Janasena leaders.

Interestingly, the increase in property tax is a part of the reforms proposed by the central government. The center has agreed to increase the borrowing limits of the state from 3 to 5 percent of the GSDP. However, the 1 percent of the increased limit was linked to four reforms in the universalization of ‘One Nation One Ration card,’ ease of doing business, power sector, and reforms in urban local bodies.

An increase in the property tax is a part of the reforms in urban local bodies.
