Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s comments in Konaseema have triggered a row. During his visit, he spoke to farmers about coconut trees withering due to saltwater intrusion and rising sea levels. While explaining the situation, he referred to an “evil eye” or “dishti” from Telangana during Bifurcation days, suggesting envy over Konaseema’s beauty.
These remarks have drawn objections from Telangana leaders, and Jadcherla MLA Anirudh Reddy is the latest to react. He challenged Pawan Kalyan, questioned his alliance politics, and criticised him for staying in Hyderabad despite claiming to stand for Andhra Pradesh.
Pawan Kalyan’s intention was likely to point at political rivalry rather than insult people of Telangana. However, the phrasing blurred that distinction and led to backlash. His comments had nothing to do with where he lives or owns property, making that angle of criticism irrelevant.
The demand for him to sell Hyderabad assets sounds more like noise than debate. At the same time, Pawan Kalyan could have handled the subject with more caution given the sensitivity around regions and identity.
Anirudh Reddy’s attack also overlooks the fact that his own Congress Party forms alliances across states, including with CPI in 2023. Alliances in politics are strategic and not always signs of weakness.
Notably, senior leaders from both BRS and Congress have maintained silence on the issue, possibly to prevent the controversy from growing further.
