Puthalapattu: Congress Poses Big Threat to YSRCP

The announcement of Congress candidates for the upcoming general elections in Andhra Pradesh has stirred up the political landscape, with notable names being fielded in key constituencies. PCC Chief Sharmila’s decision to contest herself in Kadapa Parliament signals the party’s intent to assert its strength in the region.

Similarly, candidates like Chinta Mohan in Tirupati, JD Seelam in Bapatla, and Former Union Minister Pallamraju in Kakinada Parliament reflect Congress’s strategy to field strong contenders in strategic constituencies.

The impact of these reputed Congress candidates is expected to be significant, particularly on YSRCP candidates in their respective segments. Congress is making concerted efforts to reclaim its traditional vote bank from the YSRCP, a trend that has been observed over the past two elections.

The recent announcement of candidates for Puthalapattu and GD Nellore constituencies further highlights Congress’s determination to regain lost ground. MLA MS Babu’s nomination for Puthalapattu, despite contesting previously for YSRCP, underscores the shifting political dynamics. Babu’s influence, particularly among the Dalits in the constituency, could potentially split the YSRCP’s vote share.

Since the YSRCP ticket was awarded to Sunil Kumar instead of Babu, there has been a noticeable distance between Babu’s faction and the ruling party’s candidate. Babu’s strong support base among the Dalit community, especially Tamils, poses a significant challenge for the YSRCP in Puthalapattu. In the previous election, Babu secured a substantial 55% of the votes, indicating his formidable presence in the constituency.

With Babu’s candidacy as a Congress candidate, there is a looming possibility of YSRCP facing electoral setbacks in Puthalapattu. His candidacy is likely to sway a considerable portion of the electorate away from the ruling party, potentially tilting the electoral balance in favor of Congress or other opposition parties in the constituency.
