From Trump to Musk: Rahul Gandhi’s Politics Goes Global

Whenever India finds itself at the centre of an international controversy, Rahul Gandhi appears ready to turn it into another opportunity to target Narendra Modi. The latest exchange involving Elon Musk has once again brought this political strategy into focus. Musk sarcastically addressed Mukesh Ambani as “Prime Minister Ambani”, questioning whether a businessman holds more power than India’s elected leadership. Gandhi jumped into the exchange with his “Wait till you discover the other guy” remark, apparently referring to Gautam Adani. Musk welcomed his intervention, giving Gandhi’s political insinuation an international audience.

The bigger question is why Gandhi is so quick to use such controversies to reinforce his allegations against the Modi government. Starlink’s entry into India involves regulatory approvals and national-security assessments. Musk has alleged that powerful business interests are blocking competition, but that allegation is not proof that Ambani or Adani has influenced the government’s decision. Instead of separating the verified facts from Musk’s claims, Gandhi’s response shifted the spotlight towards the very corporate-politics narrative he has repeatedly used against Modi.

This is not the first time Gandhi has taken his criticism of the government to an international audience. During his Cambridge visit in 2023, he spoke about threats to Indian democracy. In Colombia in 2025, he described the situation as a “wholesale attack” on democracy, prompting the BJP to accuse him of maligning India abroad. During the controversy over Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he helped secure a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, Gandhi again used the US President’s statements to challenge Modi’s leadership and foreign policy.

Gandhi has every right to question the government, and corporate influence deserves scrutiny wherever credible evidence exists. But should the Leader of the Opposition amplify a foreign billionaire’s allegations before the facts are established? When Musk’s sarcastic remark questioned who really runs India, Gandhi chose to turn the discussion towards Adani and Modi. For a leader seeking to challenge the government, the question is whether this approach genuinely holds power accountable or simply turns every international dispute into another opportunity for domestic political warfare.
