Now, Jagan has come up with a new proposal regarding AP Fibernet. His idea is to stream new Telugu theatrical releases on AP Fibernet service so that audiences can watch them from the comfort of their homes.
But in reality, no mainstream or even a partly prospective film would go for this mode of release. given that it will kill the OTT stream of revenue which is a pretty substantial stream for modern films. Also, piracy would hit a new high if new Telugu theatrical releases are streamed through Fibernet at homes on the day of theatrical release. This would kill the theatrical market as well.
Previously, Rajamouli came up with a similar idea – ReleaseDay.com, through which he proposed to stream new releases on OTT on the day of theatrical release. He even released Sumanth Akkineni’s Emo Gurram Egaravachu in 2014 on a pay-per-view model on the mentioned streaming portal.
The idea was a colossal dud as there were no takers for the film on the streaming portal. The company was shut down shortly after that. Needless to say, this is not a viable option for any mainstream films, given the importance of the theatrical market.
Even many OTT giants tried the direct to OTT release prospect by releasing a few mainstream films directly on OTT. This didn’t click commercially on a desired scale and they too stopped giving direct to OTT releases.
Now, Jagan is vowing to restart the same with AP Fibernet, while all he is doing is picking up Rajamouli’s failed idea and presenting it in a new fashion to AP people.
