The Ranga Reddy POCSO Court has delivered a strong and widely discussed judgement in a minor marriage and sexual assault case. The court awarded life imprisonment to both the girl’s father and her husband.
The case dates back to 2018, when a 17-yr-old minor from the Saroornagar area was forcefully married. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 75,000 each on the father and the husband.
In addition to the punishment, the judge ordered compensation for the victim. The young woman is to receive Rs 15 lakh as part of the ruling.
Women’s groups have welcomed the judgement. They say it sends a clear warning to parents who view young girls as burdens or marry them off for money.
Under Indian law, anyone below the age of 18 is considered a minor. The POCSO Act applies when a minor is subjected to sexual assault, regardless of consent.
Since both conditions were met in this case, the court delivered a strict verdict. Legal experts believe the judgement could become a reference point for similar cases.
Human rights groups and women welfare organisations have long raised concerns about child marriages. Despite awareness, such practices continue due to social pressure and financial hardship.
Activists say this ruling will act as a deterrent. They believe it sends a powerful message against child marriage and exploitation.
