Hearing a PIL for the establishment of special courts to decide criminal cases related to public servants and members of the judiciary within one year and to bar convicted persons from holding posts in legislative, executive, and/or judicial bodies for life, the Supreme Court gave a crucial ruling.
The Apex Court directed the High Courts to initiate suo moto proceedings towards expeditious disposal of pending cases against elected legislators – MPs and MLAs – from their respective states.
The Chief Justices of the High Courts will have to monitor the settlement of such cases.
The Supreme Court also directed that the courts should trial such cases on a day-to-day basis and if the trial is not completed within one year due to some extraordinary circumstances, a report has to be submitted to the Chief Justice of the respective High Court, indicating reasons for not adhering to the time limit.
If this judgment is implemented in true spirit, it will be a big problem for Andhra CM Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Jagan Mohan Reddy has been on bail for more than ten years. The trial of his cases registered by the CBI and the ED did not even start due to multiple adjournments and discharge petitions.
After becoming the Chief Minister, Jagan stopped going to the court and had sought almost 3,700+ adjournments in these four and half years.
