Supreme Court Clears Revanth Reddy in 2016 SC/ST Case

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy received relief after the Supreme Court of India upheld the Telangana High Court order that had quashed an SC/ST Atrocities case registered against him in 2016.

A bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V.M. Pancholi, dismissed the petition challenging the High Court’s decision. The court also made strong observations about the misuse of judicial forums for political purposes.

The case relates to a complaint filed in 2016 by a man named Peddiraju. He alleged that during a land dispute in Gopanpally, Hyderabad, he was attacked and abused with caste based remarks and claimed that Revanth Reddy had instigated the incident.

The Telangana High Court had earlier examined the case and quashed the FIR, stating that there were no sufficient grounds to proceed. The complainant later approached the Supreme Court seeking to overturn that order.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court noted that there was no direct evidence placing Revanth Reddy at the scene of the alleged incident. The bench observed that the case largely relied on hearsay statements and suggested that personal and political factors appeared to be behind the complaint. It cautioned that courts should not be used to settle political disputes.

The court also clarified that the filing of a chargesheet alone does not prove allegations unless supported by solid evidence. Finding no merit in the petition, the Supreme Court dismissed the challenge and confirmed the High Court’s decision.

Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra represented Revanth Reddy in the matter.
