Supreme Court Continues Suspense on Sabarimala

After a long hearing on the row of women’s entry to Sabarimala shrine, the Supreme Court delivered its judgment today. It’s a split verdict with Justices Nariman and Chandrachud differing from the three other judges. Noting that courts should tread cautiously in matters of religious beliefs, the Supreme Court has referred the review petitions in the Sabarimala matter to a larger bench.

The review petitions against the entry of women have been referred to a seven-judge bench. The current bench that had been reviewing the case is a five-judge bench. The Sabarimala temple is said to reopen for devotees on November 16th.
The judges did not give a stay on the earlier order of allowing women to the shrine which means women can go to the shrine when it re-opens for devotees. After a favorable verdict in Ayodhya case, Hindu groups were expecting a favorable judgment in this case as well. But this ruling will only mean more wait.
