The electoral mandate delivered by the people of Tamil Nadu is to be considered shocking in terms of political stability and initial expectations. They have completely rejected the traditionally strong DMK and AIDMK to ensure a shift of power towards TVK which contested its first election.
And if you look at the broad picture, it becomes blatantly evident that the personal issues with wives and divorces aren’t to be taken too seriously in South Indian politics.
Earlier in Andhra Pradesh, the former chief minister YS Jagan had repeatedly targeted Pawan Kalyan at a personal capacity. He used to repeatedly say Kalyan had multiple wives and divorces just to defame him in the public.
However, this deceptive tactic by Jagan did not yield results for him or his party. In fact, Kalyan bounced back so very strongly from 2019, that he became the deputy CM in 2024. All the narratives that Jagan built regarding wives and divorces didn’t work against PK.
A similar scenario repeated itself in the case of Tamil Nadu politics as Vijay’s wife Sangeeta broke two decades long marriage and filed for divorce just before the election. Many people anticipated that this would deteriorate the image of Vijay amongst the public.
However, Vijay was not bothered about this aspect and repeatedly communicated to the people to trust in him and not bother about his personal life. This ultimately turned out to be the reality as his TVK did remarkably well.
It appears that the South Indian population is more bothered about the political aspirations of a leader rather than his personal life and rightly so as well.
