Traffic Survey: Vizag don’t need Metro

The Detailed Project Report of Vishakapatnam Metro Rail Project is prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and it is submitted to the state government very recently. However according to the traffic survey conducted, the port city really do not need a Metro Rail.

Mass public transport system projects like the metro rail are based on the passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD) value of a city. A metro rail project to be constructed in a city, it should have a PPHPD of at least 15,000 for the project to be commercially viable. However Vizag has a maximum PPHPD of just 11,000.

However Metro projects to Vishakapatnam and Vijayawada were promised in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act and these projects will be funded by Union Government. Since it is a Central undertaking, the state government wants to complete them. The state government expects that the rapid industrialization and development going to happen in the city post the bifurcation will require a metro project in future.
