Thalapathy Vijay has begun his political journey with the TVK Party ahead of next year’s Assembly Elections. He has started attending rallies and meeting people, aiming to make an impact. His address at Karur, however, ended in tragedy.
Vijay was scheduled to arrive by noon, but he was late, and the speech began only at 7 PM due to the crowd. The delay made attendees restless, and a stampede broke out, killing 39 people and injuring over 80.
Stampedes at political gatherings have become a recurring concern. While organisers are responsible for arrangements, how leaders react during crises is closely watched. Reports say Vijay continued his speech despite the casualties.
After the incident, Vijay went to Chennai instead of staying back in Karur to visit victims and families. Hours later, he posted a brief message on X. Chief Minister MK Stalin, however, visited the hospital that night and announced ex-gratia compensation.
Following media pressure, Vijay later issued a longer message on X and announced ex-gratia. Observers note that the tragedy highlighted his lack of experience in handling public distress, raising doubts about his political future.
Meanwhile, the TVK Party approached the High Court seeking a CBI probe. They claimed the incident was not accidental and alleged it resulted from stone-pelting and a police lathi-charge, calling it a possible conspiracy.
