What Is the Film About?

Govind, Sattibabu, and Srinu are childhood friends facing divorce trials together. Their wives have filed divorce petitions in the local court. What are their issues individually? Who is at fault? The movie’s basic story deals with their judgment.

Performances

Pavan Kalyan Battula debuts as a hero with Purushaha. He is physically okay but lacks screen presence. But the bigger problem here is that the movie is a comedy. He doesn’t have the comic skills to match his co-stars. Again, luckily for him, the character is designed with more emotional touch rather than relying on comedy. All of this makes it a little easier for him to sail through, although nothing stands out.

Vaishnavi Kokkura plays the female lead. She looks the part and does a good job of showing resentment, but that’s it. The character comes across as one-dimensional, and it reflects in the performance, which looks one-note.

Analysis

Veeru Vulavala directs Purushaha. It’s a film exploring the challenges men and women face before and after marriage. It’s nothing new story-wise, but the director wanted to give it a different spin. Unfortunately, it misfires big time.

The opening block, which usually sets the tone for the film, is enough to understand where it is headed. It makes one’s head spin in various directions. Only later do we realise that the director is trying to present the three male leads as three different superheroes. They are fighting the women who are the supervillains.

Coming to the actual story, the three friends, now married, are in the court explaining their stories to a judge. On paper, this looks like a pretty simple story, but the way it’s executed is terrible. It looks like an amateurish outing from the start to the end.

The back-and-forth screenplay employed to narrate the tales of various characters, and the dialogue adds up to a chaotic, messy feel. Yes, there are a few fun one-liners in between, but they are very few.

The narrative goes on in its uneven, messy fashion to the interval, which feels like a long time coming, even though it’s only an hour and a few minutes. The interval block is decent, though. It’s predictable, but the situation works.

Post intermission, the proceedings go even further back to the college days. The content here is utterly predictable and chaotic. It immediately leads to a tiring, boring feeling. However, there is no respite.

The supporting cast tries to break the monotony with some fun, but it doesn’t work. Then there are the superhero action cuts in between that pop up randomly. Things go on in the same fashion for a long time, and we reach a climax where miraculous changes happen overnight, just to make the story end.

Overall, Purushaha is a predictable tale storywise. It is peppered with a high dose of comedy to make up for the shortfall in content. Sadly, its execution misfires and irritates big time, leaving no time to relax. It ends up as a film that is a challenge to sit through to the end.

Performances by Other Actors

Sapthagiri and Rajkumar Kasireddy are the two other main characters, along with the hero. Actually, it is these two who pull the movie to the maximum with their antics and over-the-top action. The content lets them down as nothing works. Vishika, Hasini, and Srisandhya, who play their female counterparts, are forgettable. Vennela Kishore, appearing briefly, is okay. VTV Ganesh plays a significant role in his usual style. Rajeev Kanakala does his bit by appearing in a scene.

Music and Other Departments?

Shrawan Bharadwaj’s music sounds decent, but is wasted in the outing. The background score gives an impression of being all over the place. The cinematography doesn’t look good. The extreme close-up shots give it a short film vibe in many places. The editing adds significantly to the messy feeling. The writing is below par.
