Years of Experience, Zero Security: The New Layoff Reality

Are layoffs increasingly affecting professionals above the age of 40? Many are now questioning whether experience has turned into a burden instead of a strength. For middle-class families, this situation is deeply stressful and emotionally draining.

The job market is already limited. Even after completing quality post-graduation courses, many secure stable employment only by the age of 25. Several years are then spent proving capability, building trust, and understanding workplace culture.

By the time professional stability arrives, life has already moved forward. A middle-class individual gets barely 15 years of relatively smooth working life. During this phase, saving enough for the future becomes extremely challenging.

Household expenses, children’s education, and medical needs consume most of the income. If a home loan is taken, repayment stretches across 20 to 25 years. Monthly EMIs become a constant financial pressure, leaving little room for savings.

Earlier, experience improved efficiency and decision-making. Today, the same experience is often labelled as expensive. To reduce salary and promotion costs, many companies now prefer younger and cheaper talent.

With limited options, professionals are forced to adapt. Learning new skills, upgrading continuously, and building a second income stream has become essential. Not for luxury, but simply to maintain a basic and dignified life.
