Ayesha Meera Case: Truth Buried Forever?

In any criminal justice system, fairness matters as much as the final verdict. When that sense of fairness weakens, the damage extends far beyond a single case. Public trust suffers and confidence in institutions begins to erode over time.

Some criminal cases remain in public memory not only because of the crime, but also due to unanswered questions. The murder of 17-year-old Ayesha Meera in December 2007 in Vijayawada is one such case that continues to disturb many.

A BPharma student staying at Sri Durga Ladies Hostel, Ayesha Meera was found raped and stabbed to death in a hostel bathroom. The brutality of the incident shocked families across Andhra Pradesh and triggered widespread outrage.

In the early stages, reports widely alleged the involvement of a member of an influential political family. The narrative created intense public attention. However, the direction of the investigation later shifted in a controversial manner.

In August 2008, police arrested Satyam Babu. He was reportedly suffering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a serious neurological disorder. His medical condition raised strong doubts about whether he was physically capable of committing the crime.

Despite medical records confirming his illness, Satyam Babu was convicted under Sections 302 and 376 of the IPC. The verdict sparked criticism from legal observers and civil rights groups who questioned the strength of the evidence.

In March 2017, the then Hyderabad High Court acquitted Satyam Babu, citing lack of evidence. The court also awarded compensation for wrongful incarceration. The judgment exposed serious concerns about the earlier investigation and prosecution.

The CBI took over the case in 2018 to conduct further inquiry. However, in June 2025, the agency declared the case closed. This decision disappointed many who hoped for clear answers after years of uncertainty.

The destruction of trial court records and unresolved allegations have left both Ayesha’s parents and Satyam Babu without closure. Nearly two decades later, the case continues to symbolise systemic lapses that trouble public faith in justice delivery.
