Blackout Challenge: Deadly Trend Kills 13-Year-Old

A 13-year-old boy, Ohaeri Jr., tragically lost his life in the United States after attempting a risky social media trend known as the “Blackout Challenge.” The challenge involves intentionally restricting oxygen until the participant loses consciousness.

The incident has left his family devastated, raising concerns about the influence of online challenges on young users.

The challenge encourages individuals to asphyxiate themselves in pursuit of a euphoric sensation. It is particularly appealing to teenagers, but it carries extreme dangers, including brain damage and even death. The risks increase when participants engage in it alone, without immediate help in case of an emergency.

Ohaeri Jr.’s parents stated that he did not have social media accounts and that his phone had strict parental controls. They suspect he may have learned about the challenge through his peers at school.

The boy was found unresponsive in his bedroom just hours after watching the Grammy Awards with his family. His mother attempted CPR, while his father sought help from a neighbor and contacted emergency services. Despite their efforts, the teenager could not be revived.

His father expressed deep regret, admitting he did warn his children about drugs but had never discussed the dangers of online challenges. The grieving family has started a GoFundMe campaign in his memory, raising over $74,000. They continue to struggle with the loss while supporting their three other children.
