Explicit Pics Leak, Wedding Cancel: Who’s at Fault

A recent case has set off mass debate in which just prior to a wedding, the father of the groom received a package with explicit pictures of the bride, and the wedding was subsequently called off. This case brings up a larger question: should a person’s past, particularly a woman’s, determine their future in marriage?

In the modern day and age, the notion that a woman’s history should define her deservingness for matrimony is antiquated and unjust. Men and women both have pasts, and to expect one to have a clear history while the other is given a pass is an obvious double standard.

What really signifies in a life-long union is not one’s history of relationships, but his or her current character-trait such as loyalty, gentleness, and the capacity to love and nurture his or her spouse.

It’s only human that individuals have pasts, particularly in the time when pre-marriage relationships for women and men are not unusual. To judge an individual based on his/her past is overlooking the fact that everyone learns and develops.

Of course, honesty in a relationship is paramount. But invoking someone’s history to shame or call off a wedding doesn’t sound a a mature or just choice. Everyone has a history—that doesn’t make them not worthy of love or marriage.

If a person is devoted, honest, and compassionate today, that’s what should take priority. Let’s stop the old school and begin to value people based on who they are at the present moment, and not who they used to be.
