A man who spent nine years in jail for a false rape charge has finally been acquitted by the High Court in 2025. The case has brought to light serious flaws in the functioning of trial courts.
The incident began with a 36-year-old Army officer’s wife, a mother of two. She met a 26-year-old man during a bus journey. Their connection led to a two-year affair, during which he regularly visited her in-laws’ home and they engaged in physical relations.
Trouble began when the man later married someone else. Angry over his marriage, the woman filed a rape case against him, alleging he had misled her with a false promise of marriage, taking advantage of her unstable marriage.
In 2016, the trial court convicted the man solely based on her statement. No other evidence was presented, yet he was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Now, after nearly a decade, the High Court has overturned the verdict. The judges stated her testimony was “false and baseless” and described her conduct as “immoral and promiscuous.” With this, the man has finally been acquitted.
Legal experts are raising concerns about convictions based only on uncorroborated statements. Such cases, they say, not only destroy innocent lives but also harm the credibility of real victims.
This verdict highlights the urgent need for stricter evidence checks and more balanced handling of sensitive cases. One false allegation can cost a person years of freedom and dignity.
