Recent studies suggest that infections caused by the human papillomavirus, commonly known as HPV, have become the leading cause of oropharyngeal throat cancer. This trend is gradually overtaking traditional risk factors such as tobacco use and alcohol consumption in many regions.
Researchers have identified the HPV-16 strain as the most common contributor to these cancers. The virus usually affects areas like the tonsils and the back of the throat. Over time it can remain in the body and slowly cause cellular changes that may develop into cancer.
Studies from several Western countries show that HPV may now be responsible for nearly 70 to 85 percent of throat cancer cases. These findings highlight how the causes of certain cancers are changing with time and behaviour patterns.
Medical experts explain that HPV is mainly transmitted through sexual contact, including oral sex. Research also indicates that individuals with a higher number of lifetime sexual partners may face a greater risk of oral HPV infection. Men appear to be more vulnerable than women in many cases.
Public health specialists stress the importance of prevention rather than fear. They encourage awareness campaigns and vaccination programmes. Promoting HPV vaccination, especially among young people, is considered one of the most effective ways to reduce future cases of HPV related throat cancer.
