Hyderabad got a rude shock following the deaths of two young women because of their love for their pet cats. In both cases, the pet cats were the cause of their suicides.
One girl was 20 years old and was studying BSc in the city. She belonged to Meerpet. The girl committed suicide barely 30 minutes after her pet cat died. In another incident, a 2nd year MBBS student committed suicide in Alwal after her parents scolded her for having a pet cat.
For the city, both incidents are shocking and huge eye-openers. Till now, one never heard of individuals committing suicide for pets. In most households pets are not allowed as caring for them is nothing short of raising a baby. Also, when the pet dies, the grief is inconsolable.
However, committing suicide for pet cats is something new and the psychologists say this shows a more disturbing trend among young adults.
Of course, loving one’s pet is natural. But committing suicide is a totally different consequence. Psychology experts say it shows how the young adults take their life and how they don’t think twice before taking such extreme steps.
They also blame the series on OTT platforms that glorify suicides and death. With many young adults binge-watching such series, they are pushed in their minds to take such extreme steps, say psychologists.
Parents and siblings need to be friends with each other and understand if someone is particularly disturbed. Home counseling and delicate handling of the situation is necessary, they say.
