An Indian-origin doctor working at the Royal Bahrain Hospital has been sacked from his job after posting tweets in support of Israel amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Dr Sunil Rao, a specialist in internal medicine, expressed his views on the war on X, calling Hamas a terrorist organization and Israel a victim of aggression.
The hospital issued a statement on X, announcing that Dr Rao’s service has been terminated with immediate effect. The statement said that his tweets and ideology were personal and did not reflect the opinion and values of the hospital. It also said that his posts were offensive to the society and violated the code of conduct of the hospital.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by health professionals when they express their political opinions on social media platforms.
While some may argue that doctors have the right to freedom of expression and personal views, others may contend that doctors have a responsibility to maintain neutrality and respect for different cultures and beliefs. Moreover, doctors may face legal consequences or social backlash if their opinions are deemed controversial or offensive by the authorities or the public.
