The Indian elections were not just a hot topic to discuss in India but everywhere around the world. The West had a close eye on these elections for a long time and many western talk shows have had discussions on the nature of the biggest election in the whole world. John Oliver did a special episode on the Indian elections at his show Last Week Tonight which has created a controversy.
The episode titled Indian Elections, Trump & Red Lobster, was allegedly critical of the ruling government and made some statements that were not received very well by a large group of people. But the biggest controversy erupted when JioCinema, the streaming partner of HBO, decided not to air the episode in India.
The episode was dropped on YouTube on the 2nd of June and would’ve been available for all viewers from the 6th of June. However, JioCinema has an exclusive deal with HBO and streams all episodes directly after the release. The latest episode have not yet been uploaded at JioCinema so far.
It is interesting to note that during this episode, John Oliver made a suggestive statement that this episode would certainly not be released in India and that’s exactly what happened.
