A shocking and disturbing incident has emerged from Karnataka, raising serious concerns about tourist safety in the region.
According to reports, a woman from the United States was allegedly sexually assaulted at a homestay near Nagarhole National Park in the Kodagu district. The incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Kutta police station.
The victim, who was travelling alone, had checked into the homestay during her visit. During her stay, a worker at the property, identified as Vrujesh Kumar, allegedly assaulted her. Initial reports suggested that she may have been drugged, but Kodagu Superintendent of Police Bindu Mani later clarified that there is no confirmation of any sedatives being used.
The situation became more serious after claims that the victim was unable to contact anyone for nearly three days. There are also allegations that the homestay owner, Vishal Ponnanna, instead of helping her, tried to suppress the incident and also take advantage of her sexually. Both the worker and the owner have now been arrested.
After reportedly managing to escape somehow from the location, the victim approached the U.S. Embassy, which alerted local authorities. Police then acted quickly and took both accused into custody. They have been remanded to judicial custody until May 3, and the investigation is ongoing.
G. Parameshwara, Karnataka’s Home Minister, responded to the incident by assuring strict action. He said that guidelines for homestay operators are already in place and any violations will be dealt with seriously.
This incident has once again raised concerns about safety, especially for solo travelers staying in private accommodations. While homestays are popular for their personal experience, cases like this highlight the risks when proper checks and monitoring are not followed.
