A disturbing incident at Rajiv Chowk in Gurugram has once again sparked concern about the safety of women in public spaces. On the morning of August 2, a model who had just returned from Jaipur was waiting for her cab when she was allegedly harassed in broad daylight by a man who approached her and performed an obscene act in public view.
The man reportedly kept circling the area, staring at her before unzipping his pants and masturbating in front of her. Shocked and visibly distressed, the model managed to record the act on her phone. She later shared the video online along with a detailed post describing the traumatic incident and her struggle to get help.
In her social media post, she mentioned that it was difficult to reach both the police and the women’s helpline immediately. According to her, the authorities only took serious action after her video went viral. This delayed response has drawn criticism, adding to public frustration over how such cases are often handled.
An FIR has now been registered under sections related to sexual harassment and stalking of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police officials have confirmed that they are checking CCTV footage from the area and are actively investigating the matter to identify the accused.
While this incident has triggered outrage and widespread discussion, it also serves as a grim reminder of the risks women continue to face in urban India. Questions are once again being raised about the responsiveness of the police, the reliability of emergency support systems, and the lack of bystander intervention. Until there is stronger accountability and institutional sensitivity, public safety will continue to be an everyday concern.
