Sunita Oyam, a 23-year-old former Maoist, recently surrendered to the authorities. Reports say a reward of ₹14 lakh was announced against her, and under the government’s surrender scheme, she now qualifies for several rehabilitation benefits.
The plan offers ₹14 lakh as a surrender incentive, ₹20 lakh for land purchase, ₹1.5 lakh for house construction, and ₹20,000 to ₹4.5 lakh for surrendered weapons depending on the category. It also includes ₹50,000 as a marriage allowance and ₹1.5 lakh for education or vocational training. After verification, applicants can also apply for a government job.
Many taxpayers are furious about this policy. They work long hours, pay taxes regularly, and still struggle to earn what a surrendered Naxalite receives under such schemes.
Some others believe these offers encourage peace by helping former Naxals return to normal life. If these steps stop violence and reintegrate them into society, they argue it is a fair price for long-term peace.
However, authorities don’t give all benefits at once. Each application goes through a strict verification process before any funds or jobs are approved.
This issue has triggered a strong emotional debate. Still, the focus remains on peace, fairness, and giving everyone — even former rebels — a real chance at a safer and better future.
