In what happens to be a shocking and disgusting incident, a 32-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a nursing staffer inside the ESIC Medical College’s surgical medical ICU in Alwar, Rajasthan.
This has prompted immediate police action and a hospital-level probe.
Reportedly, the victim was admitted to the hospital on June 2 for a tubectomy. She last shifted to the ICU after her surgery on June 4.
Her husband stated that he was asked by a guard to wait outside the same night at 11 pm. Then, a guard and a male staffer came back to him between 1.30 to 2.30 am and said that his wife was experiencing side effects and needed assistance.
He was asked to leave as soon as he helped her lie down.
It was only on June 5 when the woman regained consciousness and told her husband that a male staffer had allegedly assaulted her on the same night after drawing the curtains.
Her husband approached the police to file an FIR immediately. They had also informed the attending doctor who then confronted the male staffer regarding the incident.
He confessed during the interaction and has been booked for molestation and rape.
Moreover, the on-duty staff members and doctors have also been asked to give their written responses.
This horrifying violation of a patient’s dignity and safety inside a hospital ICU is not just a breach of trust, it is a glaring example of institutional negligence. How could such an assault occur under the watch of medical professionals and security staff?
