Reality Check: 80% Indian Women Worse Than Labor

According to a latest media survey by Mint. Indian men and women spend their time in vastly different ways. While men dedicate 20.3% of their day to socializing and leisure, women spend only 5.8%, as unpaid domestic work takes up 19.8% of their time, compared to just 2.7% for men.

This imbalance affects women’s presence in society, limiting their participation in employment and public life.

Only 21% of women engage in employment-related activities, while 61% of men do. The burden of household work often keeps women from pursuing careers, education, or leisure, reducing their visibility in workplaces and decision-making spaces.

Even in caregiving, the disparity is clear. A whopping 34% of women provide unpaid caregiving services, compared to 18% of men. Women are expected to manage homes and families, while men have more time for professional growth and socializing. This restricts women’s mobility and their ability to engage in cultural, economic, and political activities.

Urban women may have better job opportunities, but their responsibilities at home remain unchanged. In rural areas, traditional roles further limit their independence, keeping them confined to household labor.

With men enjoying more personal freedom and women carrying a disproportionate workload, gender inequality extends beyond homes into society. Unless domestic responsibilities are shared more equally and women are given greater opportunities in public life, their presence in workplaces, leadership roles, and social spaces will continue to be restricted.
