Shocking Remarks on Student’s Suicide: Too Far?

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) is facing serious backlash following the death of a Nepali student by suicide and the subsequent protests by fellow students.

However, instead of handling the situation with sensitivity, the institute’s staff aggravated tensions with offensive remarks, triggering outrage.

A viral video showed a KIIT professor and a staff member making condescending comments about Nepal while responding to protesting students. The statements, which compared the institute’s spending to Nepal’s GDP, were not only unnecessary but also deeply insulting. Such remarks from university representatives reflect a shocking lack of professionalism and respect for international students.

Following the uproar, the staff members issued apologies, calling their comments a “spur of the moment” reaction. However, their justifications fail to undo the damage caused by their arrogance. KIIT’s delayed response and its initial eviction of Nepali students further exposed its inability to handle crises.

The university later removed two officials and issued a formal apology, but this damage control effort appeared more like an attempt to save its reputation rather than a genuine act of accountability.

The issue has now escalated into a diplomatic matter, with Nepal’s Prime Minister and the Indian Embassy in Nepal intervening. Meanwhile, the Odisha government has formed a fact-finding committee, but whether this will lead to meaningful action remains uncertain.

KIIT’s failure in crisis management and its lack of regard for the dignity of its students, especially those from international backgrounds has become the subject of scrutiny which is yet to be properly addressed.
