In a heartfelt celebration of enduring love, a couple from Rajasthan’s Dungarpur district recently tied the knot after living together for over 70 years.
Rama Bhai Kharari, 95, and Jeewali Devi, 90, have shared a life and home in the tribal village of Galandar, raising six children and witnessing the passage of generations. Their recent wedding, filled with joy and community spirit, has touched hearts across the country.
Though modern society often sees live-in relationships as a new phenomenon, in the Vagad region of Rajasthan, which includes Dungarpur and Banswara, such unions have been traditionally accepted in tribal communities.
Rama Bhai and Jeewali Devi’s life together reflects that cultural practice, with their bond standing strong through decades of shared joys and struggles.
Now in their twilight years, the couple expressed a wish to formally marry.
Their children, some of whom hold government jobs, responded with love and respect by organizing a grand wedding ceremony. The event included all the traditional elements: a lively bindouli procession with music and dancing, the sacred saat phere around the fire, and a community feast that brought the village together.
Their eldest son, now around 60, watched his parents finally become husband and wife in a celebration that was both symbolic and deeply emotional.
