A viral video has sparked a strong debate around “Telangana family culture.” The clip, with the caption “In Telangana, families drink together,” shows a mixed group, men and women of different ages, sitting together at home and casually drinking beer.
The girl in the video, claiming to be from Telangana, says that while most families have strict rules against drinking, in her family everyone, from her mother and aunt to her grandfather and cousins, sits together and enjoys beer, especially during the hot summer.
That caption did not go down well with many viewers.
A large number of people from Telangana pushed back strongly, saying this is not normal or representative. Many responded with a clear message: “We are from Telangana too, but this does not happen.” While some accepted that drinking exists, especially among friends or cousins, they made it clear that openly drinking with elders in a family setting is uncommon, particularly in traditional households.
Many accused the video of glorifying alcohol consumption and misrepresenting Telangana culture. Comments pointed out that Telangana has deep-rooted traditions and festivals and reducing it to “family drinking vibes” feels like cheap stereotyping.
At the same time, a smaller section took a neutral or defensive stance. They argued that such practices may exist in certain urban or liberal families, and there is nothing inherently wrong with it. But even they agreed on one point. It should not be generalized as “Telangana culture.”
The backlash was strong because the video did not just show a personal lifestyle. It tried to label it as a broader cultural norm. That is where people pushed back hard.
In the end, this is less about drinking and more about representation. Telangana, like any region, has diverse lifestyles. But presenting one version as the standard was always going to trigger a reaction, and that is exactly what happened.
