A disturbing workplace incident has gone viral on social media. An Indian employee was allegedly asked by their boss to share a live location to get sick leave approved. The demand triggered widespread concern over privacy and workplace boundaries.
The incident surfaced on the Reddit community r/IndianWorkplace. The user shared a WhatsApp screenshot showing a conversation with their manager. In the chat, the boss claimed live location sharing was required as part of HR policy.
The post gained traction within days and spread across platforms. Many users criticised the demand as invasive and unnecessary. Viewers called it a clear violation of employee privacy and personal dignity.
Several discussions linked the incident to worsening work culture in India. Users said such behaviour reflects normalised exploitation and excessive control. Invasive management practices were described as increasingly common in many workplaces.
A 2022 survey by the SHRM Global Culture found that 45 percent of Indian employees dread going to work. The report highlighted toxic environments as a major cause. Poor leadership and lack of trust were cited as key issues.
The survey also pointed to micromanagement and inconsiderate leadership. These factors continue to erode employee morale. Many workers feel constantly monitored rather than supported.
A 2023 report by the International Labour Organization stated that India has Asia’s most overworked workforce. Around 50.5 percent of employees work over 49 hours weekly. This has led to burnout levels three times the global average.
Despite repeated reports of workplace exploitation, meaningful action remains limited. Such incidents continue to surface online almost daily. The pattern suggests deeper systemic issues within corporate culture.
These cases highlight the need to prioritise employee well-being. Experts stress building respectful and humane workplaces. Dignity, trust, and fair treatment must outweigh profit-driven pressure.
