A special POCSO court in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda has sentenced a former government junior engineer and his wife to death. The verdict has shocked the nation due to the scale of the crime.
The couple was found guilty of sexually abusing 33 boys over nearly a decade. They also distributed the abuse material on the dark web, according to the court’s findings.
The convicts, Ram Bhawan, aged 50, and Durgawati, aged 47, targeted children between 2010 and 2020. Victims were lured with money, gifts, and access to online games.
The abuse involved children as young as three years old. The crimes were committed across Banda and Chitrakoot districts.
Additional District Judge PK Mishra described the offences as falling under the “rarest of rare” category. He highlighted the extreme cruelty and prolonged nature of the abuse.
The court noted the severe physical and psychological trauma suffered by the victims. Some children required hospitalisation for serious injuries.
Others developed long-term health complications that may affect them for life. The judge stressed the lasting damage caused by such crimes.
The court also ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to provide compensation. Each survivor will receive ₹10 lakh as part of the relief.
The case emerged after an international probe into child sexual abuse material. Interpol alerted the CBI.
The CBI registered an FIR in October 2020. A chargesheet was filed in February 2021 after extensive investigation.
Prosecutors relied heavily on digital evidence, medical reports from AIIMS experts, and survivor testimonies to secure the conviction.
The verdict has been widely welcomed across society. Many see it as a strong message against extreme child exploitation and abuse.
