Viral: Exposing Saree – Bollywood Ruining Culture?

A recent post went viral on the internet to create controversy on social media. The post consists of a video where an upcoming actress can be seen in a unique saree draping style revealing her assets at Manish Malhotra’s Diwali party. Her identity is not confirmed though many say she is Akanksha Sharma.

The actress’s looks quickly made the post go viral, with people from both poles coming forward to express their views.

Some fans praised the actress for redefining fashion with her bold style, calling it modern and innovative, while others criticised her for “expressing vulgarity” by dressing differently than the traditional norms.

The criticising side argued that the cultural significance of the saree must be preserved through its classic drape without making changes.

This video highlights the larger influence of the film industry in redefining cultural benchmarks by setting new trends.

While staying true to your tradition is commendable, it is definitely not a sin to blend heritage and modern fashion to create something new.

The film industry has been on the front when it comes to trendsetting. What is seen as acceptable in today’s context might have been unthinkable a decade ago.

Apart from that, what a person decides to wear at a party should be their personal choice. Festivals are a time to celebrate and reflect on one’s individuality, and it is a decision people should learn to respect.
