India’s 0-2 loss to South Africa at home has triggered a fresh debate, and Aakash Chopra has now shared his view. He feels India are handing out Test caps too easily. He said many selections are happening based on IPL or white ball success rather than solid red ball preparation.
Concern Over IPL-Based Test Picks
Chopra said several recent debutants have not played enough first class cricket before making it to the Test team. He highlighted this as a serious concern at a time when India need stability in the longer format.
Numbers That Explain the Gap
He listed numbers to show the gap. Yashasvi Jaiswal had 15 first class games before debut, Shubman Gill had around 20 to 22, Sai Sudharsan had 29, Nitish Kumar Reddy had only 23, Dhruv Jurel had 15 and Devdutt Padikkal had 31. He said Padikkal has been the most consistent in domestic cricket but still misses out on the same level of chances.
Settling in Takes Time
Chopra said even Jaiswal and Gill needed time to settle in tough conditions. He said expecting every youngster to make the same jump is unrealistic. A strong base of two to three full domestic seasons helps players handle pressure and develop the right temperament.
Risks of Fast Tracking Players
He said India are fast tracking many players based on potential and IPL success. This can cause problems when conditions become challenging. He warned that such an approach can make transitions harder and leave players confused when pressure increases at the top level.
Need for Proven First Class Performers
Aakash Chopra concluded that Test caps should mainly go to players who perform consistently in first class cricket. He said those who score runs or take wickets across multiple seasons enter the Test side better prepared and more confident.
