The Indian selectors will announce the Asia Cup 2025 T20I squad on August 19, and early indications suggest a major shake-up. Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj are set to miss out despite their excellent performances in the recent Test series against England.
Opening pair backed by Gambhir
The selectors are following a different T20 blueprint rather than rewarding Test form. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are locked in as openers, backed by coach Gautam Gambhir. Yashasvi Jaiswal remains the third-choice opener, giving India a left-handed aggressive option at the top.
Gill and Siraj to be rested
Gill may have scored more than 750 Test runs and even owns a T20I century, but the management wants him fresh for the West Indies Test series that follows. Siraj, India’s leading wicket-taker in the England Tests, is also expected to be rested.
Shreyas Iyer’s comeback
The big twist is the return of Shreyas Iyer, often nicknamed “Sarpanch” in the dressing room. After 623 days away from the format, he is back in contention. He could even be named vice-captain, bringing much-needed balance to the middle order.
Strength in the middle order
Iyer’s comeback is vital in UAE conditions where batting slows down. Jitesh Sharma, after a solid IPL season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, is likely to return as the second wicketkeeper. These additions aim to strengthen the middle order with experience and intent.
Bowling attack led by Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah will lead the bowling attack. With Siraj sitting out, the extra fast-bowling slot is between Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. Arshdeep Singh adds left-arm pace, while Hardik Pandya features as the seam-bowling all-rounder in the squad.
Spin options aplenty
The spin line-up looks strong with Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel. Washington Sundar is also under discussion as a utility option, offering both off-spin and lower-order batting, which could be key on slower UAE pitches.
A new selection approach
India’s selectors are clearly focused on role-specific picks rather than big names. Gill may have the runs, but Samson, Abhishek and Jaiswal fit the T20 template better. Siraj may have the wickets, but his workload demands rest ahead of longer Test commitments.
India’s squad outlook
The Asia Cup squad will look very different from what many fans expected. Gill and Siraj may sit out, but with Shreyas Iyer returning, Samson and Abhishek trusted at the top, and Suryakumar Yadav leading as captain, India’s squad appears more balanced and sharp.
