The BCCI has introduced the Bronco Test to improve fitness among Indian cricketers. The drill, commonly used in rugby, will now be part of the players’ endurance and stamina programme.
Reason Behind the Test
The move comes after the long Test series in England, where some bowlers struggled to maintain energy. Only Mohammed Siraj played all five matches, raising concerns among the coaching staff.
How the Bronco Test Works
The Bronco Test involves running back and forth over 20, 40, and 60 metres, which counts as one set. Players must complete five sets without stopping, covering 1,200 metres in six minutes. It is a demanding drill with no room for easing up.
Expert Guidance
Strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux suggested the test, noting that fast bowlers were spending too much time in the gym instead of running. Head coach Gautam Gambhir fully supports the initiative, aiming to improve stamina for long bowling spells.
Fitness Beyond the Gym
The Bronco Test complements existing BCCI fitness assessments like the Yo-Yo Test and the 2-km run. While Yo-Yo measures short sprints and recovery, and 2-km tests overall speed, Bronco focuses on endurance and running ability over longer periods.
