IND vs NZ ODI: Star Players Rested, Fans Divided!

India is preparing for the T20 World Cup 2026, and you should expect some big names to be rested. The Board of Control for Cricket in India selectors plan to rest Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand.

ODI and T20I schedule confirmed

The three ODIs will take place on January 11, 14, and 18 in Vadodara, Rajkot, and Indore. You will then see a five match T20I series across Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Short gap before World Cup

You should note there is little recovery time after these series. The T20 World Cup begins on February 7 and runs till March 8. Matches will be played across India and Sri Lanka.

Bumrah rested by design

Jasprit Bumrah is not being rested due to injury. The team management wants you to see him play only high priority matches. Right now, T20Is matter more than ODIs.

T20Is take priority

From the selectors’ point of view, Bumrah’s presence in T20Is carries more value. The ODIs do not affect immediate plans. You will see him return when the focus shifts to the 2027 World Cup.

Gambhir’s workload plan

Head coach Gautam Gambhir wants to manage Bumrah’s workload carefully. You can expect limited exposure before the World Cup. The aim is peak fitness at the right time.

Hardik also set to miss ODIs

The same approach applies to Hardik Pandya. He missed over two months after his injury during the Asia Cup 2025 Super Fours against Sri Lanka. You should expect him to skip the ODIs.

Domestic cricket as preparation

Hardik is likely to return for the T20I series. To stay match fit, he may play one or two games for Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. No final call has been taken yet.

T20 importance underlined

You saw how vital Bumrah and Hardik are during the recent South Africa series. Their roles remain central to India’s T20 plans. Rest now helps protect that balance.

Fans question the timing

Some fans have questioned the decision on social media. You may wonder why top players are rested before a major tournament. The selectors believe caution now prevents bigger problems later.

Focus firmly on World Cup

The BCCI wants both players fully ready for the T20 World Cup. You should expect them to be preserved for matches that truly matter. The clear goal is top form for the biggest stage.
