CSK’s SRH Trade: Smart Move or Biggest Blunder?

Chennai Super Kings have made a four player trade with Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2027, but the decision to release Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis has raised questions among their fans.

England all rounder Liam Livingstone and Australian all rounder Jack Edwards will join CSK, while Khaleel and Ellis will move to SRH.

The BCCI confirmed the deal on November 5. Livingstone will join Chennai for Rs 6 crore after being bought by SRH for Rs 13 crore.

Edwards will move at his existing fee of Rs 3 crore. Khaleel and Ellis will join Hyderabad for Rs 4.8 crore and Rs 2 crore, respectively.

Khaleel Ahmed was one of Chennai’s leading wicket-takers in IPL 2025, finishing with 15 wickets in 14 matches. He played five games in the 2026 season before a right quadriceps injury ruled him out.

Nathan Ellis was signed by CSK for Rs 2 crore and was expected to handle the death over bowling. Despite, a hamstring injury before the IPL ruled him out of the entire IPL 2026 season. Chennai brought in Spencer Johnson as his replacement.

Both players will now represent SRH in the next season. Khaleel is also returning to his former franchise, having played for Hyderabad between 2018 and 2021.

Livingstone played only two matches for SRH in IPL 2026. The England all-rounder can bat in the middle order and also provide options with both leg spin and off spin.

His new contract with CSK is worth Rs 6 crore, which is Rs 7 crore less than the amount SRH had paid for him. Chennai will expect him to contribute more regularly with the bat.

Jack Edwards will join him at CSK for Rs 3 crore. The Australian seam bowling all-rounder missed the previous season because of a foot injury and is yet to make his IPL debut.

The decision to release Khaleel and Ellis has not convinced several CSK supporters. Some fans questioned why Chennai gave up two fast bowlers, especially when both could have been part of their bowling plans for IPL 2027.

Fans described the exchange as a poor decision, arguing that Khaleel and Ellis were valuable bowling options for the franchise.

Another questioned how CSK could let two quality bowlers join SRH while bringing in Livingstone and Edwards.

CSK finished eighth in the IPL 2026 points table and failed to qualify for the playoffs. SRH, meanwhile, finished third in the league stage before losing the Eliminator.

The two teams have now made different changes to their squads. Chennai have added two all rounders, while Hyderabad have brought in two fast bowlers.

CSK will hope Livingstone and Edwards can deliver in their new roles. Despite, the management will also need to address the bowling options left by Khaleel and Nathan Ellis.
