IPL: CSK’s Big Comeback Ends LSG’s Playoff Race

Chennai Super Kings registered a massive five-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the 53rd match of Indian Premier League 2026 at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. Chasing a target of 204 runs, CSK completed the chase in 19.2 overs and officially eliminated LSG from the playoff race.

Batting first, Lucknow Super Giants received a blazing start from Josh Inglis, who smashed 85 runs off just 33 balls with 10 fours and six sixes. Shahbaz Ahmed also played an important innings of 43 runs and supported the team well in the middle overs.

However, apart from Inglis and Shahbaz Ahmed, the rest of the Lucknow batting lineup struggled under pressure. LSG kept losing wickets regularly during the middle and death overs and eventually managed 203/8 despite their explosive start.

For Chennai Super Kings, Jamie Overton delivered an impressive spell and picked up three wickets. Anshul Kamboj also contributed with two important wickets during the innings.

In reply, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad guided the chase confidently. Chennai received an aggressive start from Sanju Samson, who scored 28 runs from only 14 balls before getting dismissed.

The game completely shifted after young batter Urvil Patel launched a fearless counterattack. He reached his half-century in just 13 balls and scored 65 runs off 23 deliveries with eight massive sixes at a stunning strike rate of 282.

CSK shocked Lucknow by scoring 97 runs during the powerplay overs itself. Ruturaj Gaikwad later played a composed innings of 42 runs and ensured Chennai remained in control of the chase from one end.

In the final overs, Shivam Dube and Prashant Veer smashed two sixes each to comfortably finish the match for Chennai Super Kings.

Lucknow Super Giants endured a disappointing outing with both ball and fielding. Their bowlers struggled to control the scoring rate, while multiple dropped catches during CSK’s chase further damaged their chances of defending the target.

Mohammed Shami conceded 37 runs, while Avesh Khan gave away 44 runs. Although Digvesh Rathi and Shahbaz Ahmed picked up two wickets each, the early damage caused by Chennai’s batting proved too costly.

With this important victory, Chennai Super Kings climbed to fifth position in the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points from 11 matches, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants were officially knocked out of the playoff race after the defeat.
