Karnataka Star vs Sarfaraz? What India Needs at No. 3

India have a big selection call to make ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The question is simple Devdutt Padikkal or Sarfaraz Khan at No. 3?

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has backed Padikkal for the spot after the left hander strengthened his case with an unbeaten 142 in India’s warm up game.

Devdutt Padikkal’s century has come at the right time. With Sai Sudharsan ruled out, Sarfaraz was brought into the squad as his replacement. But does Sarfaraz now have to wait?

De Villiers believes Devdutt Padikkal offers India something different. His left handed batting, solid technique and calm approach could help India maintain a right left combination, especially against spin on a turning Galle pitch.

Sarfaraz, meanwhile, brings a completely different option. His aggressive approach can put pressure on bowlers and change the game quickly.

So what should Gautam Gambhir and the team management choose stability or aggression? De Villiers is leaning towards Padikkal, but admitted it is a difficult decision.

The No. 3 call could become even more important with Jasprit Bumrah unavailable.

India are currently fifth in the WTC standings and face a tough road ahead, with New Zealand and Australia Tests still to come.
