India head coach Gautam Gambhir has responded to the questions over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s place in the playing XI. He said that his job is to take the right decisions for the team and not make everyone happy.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not get a chance in the T20I series against West Indies. He played only two matches against New Zealand, scoring 49 runs. His 45 off 19 balls in the third T20I was one of his notable performances in the series.
Despite, he was left out of the fourth T20I when Ishan Kishan returned to the team after recovering from injury. The decision raised questions, especially after Sooryavanshi’s performance in the previous match.
Ahead of the fifth T20I, Gambhir said “My job is not to make everyone happy. My job is to take the right decisions, not the popular decisions. And that is what I’m there for. ”
He also explained that players who have performed well for a longer period deserve enough chances. Gambhir added that the team wants to maintain confidence among players in the dressing room.
India have continued to back Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson as their opening pair, while Sooryavanshi has had to wait for another opportunity.
Questions were also raised over Shivam Dube and Kuldeep Yadav not getting a chance in the New Zealand series, even after India had sealed the series.
Gambhir praised the players for adjusting to the conditions despite a short break after the West Indies series.
He also pointed out that several players were playing in New Zealand for the first time.
India won the first three matches to seal the T20I series. Gambhir’s comments show that the team management is ready to stick with its decisions despite questions over player selection.
