New Delhi – Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has sparked a heated debate over India’s squad balance for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
Taking to social media, Kaif reminded fans that Rohit Sharma’s T20 World Cup–winning team in 2024 had the luxury of three all-rounders — Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel — which gave India six proper bowling options and batting depth till No. 8.
For the Asia Cup, however, only two genuine all-rounders — Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel — feature in the squad. This, Kaif warned, could force India to rethink its winning combination.
Kaif’s Warning
Kaif pointed out that the lack of a third all-rounder may put pressure on both the batting and bowling units. Without Jadeja, the balance between attack and depth looks less flexible, making India more vulnerable against strong opposition.
Not All Doom and Gloom
Still, cricket analysts argue this is not a verdict of failure. Every campaign is unique, and the Asia Cup could become an opportunity for India to prove its depth and adaptability. The challenge lies in whether the management can tweak strategies and bring the best out of a slightly lighter squad.
With Hardik’s explosive finishing and Axar’s dual role as a spinner and lower-order hitter, India still has strong all-round options. The Asia Cup will reveal if that’s enough to recreate the magic of 2024.
