Kolkata Knight Riders have suffered a major setback just days before the start of IPL 2026. Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the entire season due to a knee injury. The development has come as a big blow for the defending champions.
The young pacer suffered the injury during India’s warm up match against South Africa in Navi Mumbai. The game was played ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. The injury forced Rana to miss the global tournament as well.
Following the setback, Mohammed Siraj was named as his replacement in the Indian squad. Rana later underwent knee surgery in Mumbai on February 9. However, his recovery will take longer than expected.
Medical reports suggest that he will not be fit before the IPL season begins on March 28. As a result, Kolkata Knight Riders will have to move forward without one of their key bowlers. The team management is now assessing its bowling options.
His absence could create opportunities for other fast bowlers in the squad. Players such as Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, Kartik Tyagi and Akash Deep may receive more chances this season. The franchise has not yet announced a replacement player.
Meanwhile, KKR recently added Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani to their squad for IPL 2026. The tall pacer impressed during the recent T20 World Cup with strong performances. His inclusion strengthens the pace department.
Muzarabani picked up 13 wickets in the tournament and helped Zimbabwe reach the Super Eights stage. He also brings valuable experience in T20 cricket. The pacer has taken more than 90 wickets in international matches.
Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders had released Bangladesh left arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the squad last December. The squad changes have reshaped the bowling unit ahead of the new season.
Despite the new additions, Harshit Rana’s absence remains a major loss for the franchise. The young fast bowler played a key role in their IPL 2024 title winning campaign. He claimed 19 wickets in 13 matches during that season.
KKR will now look for other bowlers to step up and fill the gap. The team will be eager to maintain its strong momentum as the new IPL season approaches.
