ICC 2027-31 FTP ODI Changes
The ICC could be planning a major change to the international cricket calendar, with bilateral ODIs set to take a hit in the 2027-31 Future Tours Programme (FTP).
The ICC will hold a cricket operations workshop in Dubai this week, where the next (FTP) cycle will be discussed. The final schedule is expected to be approved at the ICC quarterly meeting in Bali in November.
So, what exactly is changing? The next FTP could have more T20Is between Full Member nations, while the number of bilateral ODIs could come down.
The packed international calendar and the growing number of T20 leagues have made it difficult for boards to fit everything in.
But this does not mean the ICC is giving up on ODI cricket. The ODI World Cup will remain the biggest event in the format.
There are also discussions about using tri-series and quadrangular tournaments to give bilateral ODIs more importance without bringing back the ODI Super League.
The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will make the calendar even more difficult. Cricket is set to return to the Olympics for the first time since 1900, with the men’s T20 competition expected in July.
India, Australia and England have already planned most of their major commitments for the 2027-31 cycle.
The Ashes will be played in 2027, 2029-30 and 2031, while England are also scheduled to tour India for Tests in early 2028.
The ICC will also discuss the World Test Championship. Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland could be considered for an expanded WTC, while one-Test series could make it easier to accommodate more teams.
The big question now is whether bilateral ODIs can survive the increasingly crowded cricket calendar.
If the proposed changes are approved, international cricket could look very different from 2027 onwards.
