India–Pakistan Clash in Trouble After Sehwag Promo?

India vs Pakistan matches are more than just cricket. They bring emotion, rivalry, and history. But with Asia Cup 2025 just a month away, excitement has taken a backseat due to a recent controversy.

Sehwag Promo Faces Heavy Backlash

A promo released by Sony Sports Network, featuring former cricketer Virender Sehwag, was meant to build hype for the India vs Pakistan group stage match on 14 September in Dubai.

Instead, it drew criticism from many fans who felt the timing was insensitive. The memory of the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 innocent people, is still fresh in many minds.

Tensions Still High After Operation Sindoor

India’s recent Operation Sindoor in May has kept national sentiment tense. For many, celebrating a cricket match against Pakistan right now seems inappropriate.

Some fans were especially upset with Sehwag’s involvement, questioning his patriotism. One fan said it was “really sad” and that the horror of the Pahalgam attack on Hindu tourists should not be forgotten.

Fans Call for Boycott

Another viewer remarked that “terror and entertainment cannot go together” and promised to skip the match entirely. A few even criticised both the BCCI and Sehwag, calling their promotion of the game a “shame.”

The outrage goes beyond one promo. It has triggered a larger debate: should India be playing Pakistan in any format of the game?

Government’s Stand vs Public Sentiment

The Indian government has maintained that there will be no bilateral cricket with Pakistan. However, matches in ICC and ACC tournaments like the Asia Cup will continue.

Still, many fans believe this sends mixed signals. They feel caught between love for cricket and the pain caused by real-world events.

Will the Match Still Draw Viewers?

Despite the anger online, the match will go ahead. Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian team will face Pakistan in Dubai, in what’s expected to be the most watched match of the tournament.

The big question remains: will social media outrage lead to an actual boycott, or will the passion for cricket once again win when the first ball is bowled?
