BCCI has once again come up with a new rule tailor-made to make the biggest cricket league in the world even more exciting. After the introduction of the Impact player two years ago, IPL 2025 will now see two new balls being used in the second Innings.
However, if you dive into the details, this could be a dangerous rule inviting more fights on the field.
According to Media reports, this rule is put in place to counter the dew that seldom happens in India’s humid environment. In a crucial detail, only on-field umpires will make the call, after the 11th over of 2nd innings, whether there is “excessive dew” for a new ball to be taken or not.
As there is no objective method to determine what constitutes “excessive dew,” at the end of the day it is up to two people to decide this match-changing detail.
Thus, sooner rather than later they are bound to make mistakes or make an unpopular call. So say goodbye to the Fair Play award as this rule could lead to major fights between the captain and the umpires on the field.
But before the on-field fights, netizens have already started debating this rule with polarising views.
Some IPL fans feel this is a much-needed rule, especially for locations like Bengaluru and Mumbai where high scores are easily chased. Critics, however, believe this is ruining the IPL’s prestige and now shifts the scale too much in favor of the team bowling second.
The impact player rule has been a major debate not just among the fans but among experts and players themselves. Will this new rule be a masterstroke or another blunder by the BCCI? Only time will tell.
Watching a big star deliver a memorable theatrical experience is something fans always look forward…
