IPL: What RR, PBKS, CSK, DC & KKR Need To Qualify

The race for the final playoff spot in IPL 2026 has become extremely intense as the league stage approaches its end. Three teams have already secured qualification for the playoffs, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Now, only one playoff position remains open and five teams are still fighting for it. Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders are all mathematically alive in the competition.

Rajasthan Royals gained a major advantage after their important victory over LSG. RR currently sit fourth on the points table with 14 points from 13 matches. Their qualification scenario is now straightforward heading into the final league game.

If Rajasthan Royals defeat MI in their last match, they will move to 16 points and qualify directly for the playoffs. They will not have to depend on any other team’s result. The crucial match is scheduled for May 24 at Wankhede Stadium.

By the time RR face MI, they will already know the results involving PBKS, CSK and KKR. This could further simplify the qualification equation for Rajasthan Royals depending on how the earlier matches unfold.

Punjab Kings are still in contention, but they no longer control their own destiny completely. PBKS have one match left against LSG. A win would take them to 15 points and keep their hopes alive.

However, Punjab Kings will still need Rajasthan Royals to lose against MI. If RR win and reach 16 points, PBKS will be eliminated even after defeating LSG in their final fixture.

Chennai Super Kings are also mathematically alive in the playoff race, though their chances have become complicated. CSK must beat GT in their last league game and hope both RR and PBKS lose their remaining matches.

Net run rate could play a crucial role if multiple teams finish with the same number of points. CSK’s inconsistent middle phase of the tournament has pushed them into a situation where they are now heavily dependent on other results.

Delhi Capitals are also hanging by a thread in the playoff race. DC need to beat KKR in their final league match and then hope RR, PBKS and CSK fail to win their remaining games.

Even if those results go in their favour, Delhi Capitals may still need a better net run rate to qualify. Their poor performances in the second half of the season have made the playoff path extremely difficult.

Kolkata Knight Riders still have a slim mathematical chance as well. KKR must defeat DC in their final game and also hope RR and PBKS lose their remaining matches. A convincing win margin could improve their net run rate significantly.

The battle for the final IPL 2026 playoff spot is now expected to go down to the very last day of the league stage. Several teams are still alive, making the closing matches of the tournament even more exciting for fans.
