Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has shared his opinion on leadership within Indian cricket, calling for a single captain across all formats similar to how things were before the Gautam Gambhir era.
Irfan Pathan Bats for a Unified Captaincy Model
Calling the current split-captain model a “non-long-term solution”, Irfan backed Shubman Gill as a potential all-format leader. He highlighted Gill’s leadership experience in the IPL and strong performances during the England series.
“I believe Shubman Gill as an all-format captain over time is the right way forward,” Irfan said.
Support and Criticism from Fans
While some fans appreciated Irfan’s forward-thinking approach, others were quick to criticise. A few even alleged that his comments were an indirect way to align with new head coach Gautam Gambhir, possibly in hopes of becoming India’s next bowling coach after Morne Morkel.
Will the BCCI Consider the Suggestion?
Currently, fans seem content with the leadership structure in place. Whether the BCCI takes Irfan’s suggestion seriously remains to be seen. However, the idea of grooming Shubman Gill into an all-format captain could become a topic of deeper discussion in the coming seasons.
